Featuring Silence & The Unwinking Minds & Ed Herbers

In this episode of The Relay Station, there are two albums that are essential listens, each with their own unique approach to textured layers, wide vistas of sound, and intriguing sonic spaces for reflection. My first featured artist is the incomparable Silence and the Unwinking Minds with new music from their album Emulsion — an ambient experience that's made my essentials list; and later on in the program Ed Herbers with the first in a series of four ambient albums exploring the four seasons — a fantastic listening experience with his gorgeous and innovative approach to ambient music composition.

Artist Information

Silence and the Unwinking Minds

Let’s talk about one of the recent releases to come from Soundghost Records from US-based artist Silence and the Unwinking Minds — the fruits of composer and producer Derek Pearson. In a vast expanse of ambient and atmospheric music, there are pockets of artists and albums that stand out from the crowd and have something unique to bring to our collective quest to grab hold of the ephemeral and ride the wave of an artist’s imagination. The new album “Emulsion” from Silence and the Unwinking Minds is that oasis in a sea of noise and legitimately finds a spot in my personal list of essential albums in the ambient genre. Pearson graces us with a soft wash of noise, delicate and wide-ranging spectral particulates, the subtle kiss of distressed tape, an embrace of warm ambient guitar, immersive spatial sound beds, and this feeling of being baptized into an all-encompassing vista of warmth, nostalgia, and the stuff of daydreams. In all sincerity, I cannot say enough good things about this album. From the album “Emulsion”, here’s Silence and the Unwinking Minds with the track “Impermanence”, here on the Relay Station.

Ed Herbers

There’s one ambient artist who’s been on my radar for the past few years, watching his growth and progression as an artist, musician, and sound designer — one that you may wish to keep your eye on as well. Ohio-based electronic artist Ed Herbers has been blazing his own trail with his unique approach to music composition, employing the use of the app “Renoise”, a grid-based music tracker to sequence all of his ambient compositions. Add to his creativity and musicianship, he’s quite the humanitarian as well — more recently he was centrally involved in a charitable compilation album of ambient and atmospheric artists to help the underserved flood victims in Asheville, North Carolina. The latest album from Ed Herbers — which is the first part in a series of four reflections on the seasons — is worth the addition to your ambient playlists. There is this deep spatial bed of pad synthetics with Gilmour-inspired minimalist guitar motifs, ushering in this feeling of becoming entranced and lulled into a state of reflection. Each track has varying moody motifs layered with a veneer of mystique, an homage to the dark wintry months with wind-swept textures and soft noise. It’s a gorgeous listen. From the album “Season Cycle: Winter”, here’s Ed Herbers with the track “Full Moon’s Light on Fallen Show”, here on The Relay Station.
